What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that affects the skin. It progresses when a person’s immune system sends defective signals that tell skin cells to grow too quickly, forming in days rather than weeks. The skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin, causing patches of psoriasis to appear. Psoriasis frequently affects the areas in around the elbow, knees and scalp.

What causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause is unidentified. There may be a combination of factors, including genetic disposition and environmental features. The immune system is thought to play a major role. In spite of more than three decades of research the root cause of psoriasis is still unknown.

What does Psoriasis look like?

Psoriasis appears as light red areas of thickened, raised and scaling skin. Some people have such mild psoriasis with small, faint areas, so faint in fact that they may not even suspect that have a medical ailment. It has a variable course, occasionally improving or worsening. There are some environmental conditions that can make symptoms worse, such as colder winter months.

Psoriasis affects both sexes and all races equally. Most commonly the disease is identified and diagnosed in the early teen years. Patients with psoriasis are more likely to have diabetes, high blood lipids and heart disease.

We offer treatment with topical creams, pills, biologics and laser/light therapy.
