What are Hives?
Hives, also known as Urticaria is an occurrence of red swollen bumps, plaques or skin-colored welts called wheals that appear on the skin unexpectedly; they are caused by the body’s reaction to allergens or other causes that can be difficult to pin point. Hives typically itch, but may also burn or tingle. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the lips, tongue, throat, face, or ears. Hives can vary widely in size and scope, they may be small dots or larger wider areas. They can last for hours, or up to one day before fading.
What Causes Hives?
Allergic reactions, chemicals in specific foods, insect bites, excessive exposure to sunlight, or certain medications can all cause histamine release which the body reacts to and forms hives.
