The Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a state-of-the-art laser treatment for venous insufficiency - which often leads to varicose veins. Varicose veins occur when veins are not properly returning blood from the lower legs to the heart. Normally, blood valves within the veins open to allow for the flow of blood to the heart and close to prevent backflow. When these valves malfunction, blood overfills and distends the superficial veins under the skin, resulting in the bulging associated with varicose veins.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the veins are completely removed from the leg. However, this procedure is often agonizing, leaves scars, and increases the chance of reoccurrence.
